IDF Soldiers Instructed To Refrain From Eating and Drinking in front of Palestinian population
The Following is from Y-NET:
"Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi have decided to ease a series of restrictions on the Palestinian population during the month of Muslim month Ramadan, which begins Saturday.
The soldiers were instructed to act respectfully towards the residents and refrain as much as possible from eating, drinking and smoking in public in front of the Palestinian population, particularly at crossings, during the fasting hours."
Even To Our Enemies, Jews Are Gracious and Respectful
It is always striking to me the great amount of respect the Israeli army, and Israelis and Jews in general, are willing to afford to their enemies, especially since our actions are not reciprocated. I don't imagine a place where arabs would refrain from eating in front of Jewish on Yom Kippur. But at the end of the day, this is what makes a Jew different.
It reminds me of Golda Meir's suprising statement that "we can forgive the Palestinians for killing our children, but not for forcing us to kill theirs..[continued below}." I think what she was trying to saw was that the Jewish people are a special people and being forced to be degraded to indecent violent acts are beneath us, although at times necessary (this is a lot different than the media that so often makes Israeli into the oppressors and war mongers).
Just to mention it, the rest of Golda Meir's quote is that, "more importantly - peace can be made only when the Palestinian people will start loving their children more than they hate us."
